Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome
Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Rome, citizens who dwelled on hillsides had to travel even further down to get their water from natural sources. If residents living at higher elevations did not have accessibility to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the other existing systems of the time, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. In the early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed underground through Acqua Vergine to provide drinking water to Pincian Hill. Through its initial construction, pozzi (or manholes) were added at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. He didn’t get an adequate amount water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his residential property to collect rainwater. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat under his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.Modern Wall Water Features
