The Major Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues
The Major Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues Archaic Greeks were well known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs.
Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look stiff and typically had foot in front; the males were vigorous, robust, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A massive age of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of state, expressions of art, and a higher appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are instances of the sorts of conflicts that emerged frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.
