Aspects of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were renowned for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Younger, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures. Considered by Greeks to represent skin care, the kouroi were structured into firm, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, brawny, and fit. Around 650 BC, life-size models of the kouroi began to be observed. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more sophisticated forms of government and art, and obtained more information about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece.
