The Dispersion of Water Feature Design Innovation Contributing to the development of scientific technology were the published papers and illustrated publications of the time. They were also the primary method of transmitting practical hydraulic facts and fountain design suggestions throughout Europe. In the later part of the 1500's, a French water fountain developer (whose name has been lost) was the globally renowned hydraulics innovator. The water screw, a mechanical way to move water, and devised by Archimedes, was featured in the book. One can see Bernini's earliest masterpiece, the Barcaccia water fountain, at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. This area is still filled with Roman locals and visitors who like to exchanging gossip or going over the day's news. One of the city’s most stylish meeting spots are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would undoubtedly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the very first water fountain of the master's career. Illustrated in the fountain's design is a large ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. The great flooding of the Tevere that covered the whole region with water in the 16th was commemorated by this momentous fountain as recorded by reports dating back to this time. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a prolonged time period, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.
