The First Modern Wall Fountains

The First Modern Wall Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek texts were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. He undertook the beautification of Rome to turn it into the model seat of the Christian world. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Adjustments and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Gian Bernini's Public Fountains

Gian Bernini's Public Fountains There are countless popular fountains in the city center of Rome. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century planned, conceptualized and constructed virtually all of them. Also a city builder, he had abilities as a water feature designer, and records of his life's work are noticeable throughout the avenues of Rome. Eventually travelling to Rome to completely reveal their art, chiefly in the shape of public water fountains, Bernini’s father, a distinguished Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son. The young Bernini received compliments from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an excellent employee. At the start he was recognized for his sculptural abilities. Working gracefully with Roman marble, he used a base of experience in the ancient Greek architecture, most obviously in the Vatican.Gian Bernini's Public Fountains 00334558.jpg Though many artists impacted his artistic endeavors, Michelangelo affected him the most.

Architectural Statues in Early Greece

Architectural Statues in Early Greece A good number of sculptors were paid by the temples to accentuate the intricate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods up until the period came to a close and many Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more typical for sculptors to portray everyday people as well. Sometimes, a depiction of wealthy families' forefathers would be commissioned to be placed inside of huge familial tombs, and portraiture, which would be replicated by the Romans upon their conquest of Greek civilization, also became customary. The usage of sculpture and other art forms differed through the years of The Greek Classical period, a time of artistic progress when the arts had more than one goal. Greek sculpture was a modern component of antiquity, whether the reason was faith based fervor or visual fulfillment, and its contemporary quality may be what endears it to us now.
