The Defining Characteristics of Classic Greek Statues
The Defining Characteristics of Classic Greek Statues The first freestanding sculpture was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Thought of by Greeks to represent beauty, the kouroi were formed into inflexible, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-developed, and athletic. In about 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. A massive age of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about newer forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are examples of the kinds of clashes that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
Bernini: The Genius Behind Italy's Most Impressive Water Fountains
Bernini: The Genius Behind Italy's Most Impressive Water Fountains The Barcaccia, Bernini's very first fountain, is a striking chef d'oeuvre built at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. Roman residents and site seers who enjoy verbal exchanges as well as being the company of others still flood this spot.
Today, the city streets around Bernini's water fountain are a trendy area where people go to gather, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the very first fountain of the master's career. Depicted in the fountain's design is a large ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the tremendous fountain. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting period of time, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.
