An extensive cleaning every three-four months is recommended for garden fountains. Before cleaning, all the water must be taken out. Next use gentle and a soft sponge to clean the innner part of the reservoir. Feel free to use a toothbrush if necessary for any stubborn crevasses. Do not leave any soap deposits in or on the fountain.
It is highly advised taking the pump apart to better clean the inside and eliminate any plankton or calcium. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it easier to wash. Mineral or rain water, versus tap water, is ideal in order to prevent any build-up of chemicals inside the pump.
And finally, make sure the water level is continuously full in order to keep your fountain working smoothly. Low water levels can damage the pump - and you do not want that!
