Bernini: The Master of Italy's Greatest Fountains
Bernini: The Master of Italy's Greatest Fountains One can see Bernini's earliest masterpiece, the Barcaccia fountain, at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, you will find Roman residents and vacation goers occupying this spot to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. The streets surrounding his water fountain have come to be one of the city’s most fashionable gathering places, something which would certainly have pleased Bernini himself. In around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII helped Bernini launch his career with the construction of his first water fountain. People can now see the fountain as a depiction of a great ship gradually sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the tremendous fountain. In 1665 Bernini traveled to France, in what was to be his only extended absence from Italy.

Attributes of Outdoor Statuary in Archaic Greece
The primitive Greeks developed the first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot stretched out of a fixed forward-facing pose and the male figurines were regularly unclothed, with a strong, powerful build. In about 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. Throughout the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. Similar to many other periods of historical conflict, conflicts were common, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
