The Major Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues The initial freestanding statuary was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to appear rigid and commonly had foot forward; the males were healthy, strong, and nude. In about 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more polished forms of government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece.
Still, these clashes did little to hinder the progress of the Greek civilization.

Berkeley Castle, potentially the most uncorrupted model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now. It is said that the keep was created during William the Conqueror's time. A spacious terrace meant for strolling and as a means to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an old yew hedge trimmed into the figure of crude battlements.
