Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Problems

Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water ProblemsAcqua Vergine: Remedy Rome's Water Problems 30109474650155449487.jpg With the construction of the first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, folks who lived on the city’s foothills no longer had to rely only on naturally-occurring spring water for their demands. If inhabitants residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the remaining existing systems of the time, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from under ground. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to supply water to Pincian Hill. Through its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were added at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Despite the fact that the cardinal also had a cistern to accumulate rainwater, it didn’t produce enough water. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residential property.

The central purpose of a fountain was originally strictly functional. Water fountains were linked to a spring or aqueduct to supply potable water as well as bathing water for cities, townships and villages. Used until the nineteenth century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their origin of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from gravity. Acting as an element of decoration and celebration, fountains also supplied clean, fresh drinking water. Animals or heroes made of bronze or stone masks were often times used by Romans to decorate their fountains. Muslims and Moorish landscaping designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller versions of the gardens of paradise. The fountains found in the Gardens of Versailles were meant to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were extolled with baroque style fountains constructed to mark the place of entry of Roman aqueducts.

Urban fountains built at the end of the nineteenth functioned only as decorative and celebratory adornments since indoor plumbing provided the necessary drinking water. The creation of unique water effects and the recycling of water were 2 things made possible by swapping gravity with mechanical pumps.

Modern-day fountains function mostly as decoration for community spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational events.
