The Major Characteristics of Classic Greek Sculpture
The Major Characteristics of Classic Greek Sculpture
Archaic Greeks were known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. In 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be observed. A huge time of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian battles, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are instances of the sorts of conflicts that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
