Archaic Greek Artwork: Garden Statuary The initial freestanding sculpture was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars.
For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and undressing. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A substantial period of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. However, these conflicts did little to hinder the progression of the Greek civilization.
