Root Contemporary Wall Fountains 7494822103106335.jpg The Root of Contemporary Wall Fountains Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of ancient texts from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent restoration at the bidding of the Pope. The historical Roman tradition of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest The introduction of the Normans in the second half of the eleventh century greatly modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But before concentrating on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society. Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were usually immense stone buildings located in the biggest and most fertile valleys, while castles were constructed on windy crests where their residents dedicated time and space to tasks for offense and defense. The calm method of gardening was not viable in these dismal bastions. The purest specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent in modern times is Berkeley Castle.Anglo-Saxon Landscapes Time Norman Conquest 8440046433.jpg The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time.
