Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome
Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, people living at higher elevations had to depend on natural streams for their water. Throughout this time period, there were only 2 other technologies capable of providing water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. In the early 16th century, the city began to utilize the water that ran beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to provide drinking water to Pincian Hill. Through its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were located at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. Although they were primarily planned to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, commencing when he obtained the property in 1543. He didn’t get adequate water from the cistern that he had constructed on his residential property to collect rainwater.
To give himself with a more practical system to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened up, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
Cultural Sculpture in Early Greece
Cultural Sculpture in Early Greece
Though the majority of sculptors were paid by the temples to decorate the elaborate columns and archways with renderings of the gods, as the period came to a close, it became more common for sculptors to represent average people as well because many of Greeks had started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred. Often times, a interpretation of wealthy families' ancestors would be commissioned to be located within huge familial burial tombs, and portraiture, which would be replicated by the Romans upon their conquest of Greek civilization, also became commonplace. A point of aesthetic progression, the use of sculpture and other art forms transformed throughout the Greek Classical period, so it is not entirely accurate to say that the arts served only one function. It may be the modern quality of Greek sculpture that captivates our eye these days; it was on a leading-edge practice of the classic world whether it was established for religious reasons or aesthetic pleasure.
