A Short History of Early Water Features
The water from creeks and other sources was originally supplied to the citizens of nearby communities and municipalities by way of water fountains, whose purpose was largely practical, not aesthetic. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was necessary to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's spout, a system without equal until the later part of the 19th century. The elegance and spectacle of fountains make them ideal for historical monuments. The contemporary fountains of modern times bear little resemblance to the very first water fountains. A stone basin, crafted from rock, was the very first fountain, utilized for containing water for drinking and religious functions. Pure stone basins as fountains have been recovered from 2000 B.C.. The very first civilizations that utilized fountains depended on gravity to drive water through spigots. Drinking water was supplied by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public monuments, as beautiful as they are practical. Fountains with elaborate decoration started to show up in Rome in approx. 6 B.C., commonly gods and animals, made with natural stone or bronze. The City of Rome had an elaborate system of aqueducts that furnished the water for the many fountains that were situated throughout the urban center.
