Modern Garden Decor: Outdoor Fountains and their Beginnings

Originally, fountains only served a practical purpose. People in cities, towns and villages received their drinking water, as well as water to bathe and wash, via aqueducts or springs in the vicinity. Up to the late nineteenth century, water fountains had to be near an aqueduct or reservoir and higher than the fountain so that gravity could make the water flow down or shoot high into the air. Fountains were an excellent source of water, and also served to decorate living areas and celebrate the artist. Roman fountains often depicted images of animals or heroes made of metal or stone masks. Muslims and Moorish garden designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller models of the gardens of paradise. Fountains played a considerable role in the Gardens of Versailles, all part of French King Louis XIV’s desire to exercise his power over nature. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were glorified with baroque style fountains made to mark the arrival points of Roman aqueducts.

The end of the nineteenth century saw the increase in usage of indoor plumbing to supply drinking water, so urban fountains were relegated to strictly decorative elements. Gravity was replaced by mechanical pumps in order to permit fountains to bring in clean water and allow for amazing water displays.

Modern-day fountains serve mostly as decoration for community spaces, to honor individuals or events, and enhance entertainment and recreational activities.

Installation and Maintenance of Wall fountains

The typical outdoor wall feature is available in an easy-to-use kit that comes with everything you need and more to properly install it. A submersible pump, hoses and basin, or reservoir, are included in the kit. If the size is average, the basin can be concealed amongst your garden plants. Once your wall fountain is installed, all that is required is consistent cleaning and some light maintenance.

Replace the water regularly so it is always clean. Leaves, branches or dirt are types of rubbish which should be cleared away quickly. Ensure that your outdoor wall fountain is shielded from bitterly cold winter temperatures. Your pump may split when exposed to freezing water during the cold weather, so it is best to bring it indoors to avoid any damage. All in all, an outdoor wall fountain can last for any number of years with the right maintenance and care.
