The Anglo-Saxon way of life was dramatically changed by the introduction of the Normans in the later eleventh century. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and adornment until the Normans had conquered the whole region. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures built in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the occupants focused on learning offensive and defensive strategies. Relaxing pastimes such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. Berkeley Castle is probably the most intact model in existence nowadays of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A massive terrace serves as a discouraging factor to intruders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. On one of these terraces lies a charming bowling green: it's covered in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.
