The Dissemination of Water Fountain Design Knowledge The circulated documents and illustrated publications of the time contributed to the development of scientific innovation, and were the chief means of dissiminating practical hydraulic concepts and fountain ideas throughout Europe. A globally recognized innovator in hydraulics in the later part of the 1500's was a French fountain engineer, whose name has been lost to history.
His experience in designing gardens and grottoes with integrated and ingenious water fountains began in Italy and with commissions in Brussels, London and Germany. In France, near the closure of his life, he published “The Principle of Moving Forces”, a book which became the fundamental text on hydraulic technology and engineering. The publication updated important hydraulic discoveries since classical antiquity as well as describing modern day hydraulic technologies. Dominant among these works were those of Archimedes, the developer of the water screw, a mechanical method of moving water. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
