Rome’s First Water Delivery Systems Previous to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Rome, citizens who dwelled on hillsides had to journey even further down to gather their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technologies readily available at the time to supply water to segments of high elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were engineered at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Even though they were initially manufactured to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, starting when he purchased the property in 1543.
