At What Point Did Water Features Emerge? Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek documents into Latin.
In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to enhance the beauty of the city. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Attributes of Outdoor Statues in Archaic Greece The first freestanding statuary was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are referred to as kouros figures. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and naked. In around 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was an awesome point of change for the Greeks as they extended into new forms of government, produced unique expressions of art, and gained knowledge of the people and cultures outside of Greece. But in spite of the disputes, the Greek civilization went on to advance, unabated.
