Early Water Delivery Solutions in Rome
Early Water Delivery Solutions in Rome Rome’s first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to depend on local streams for their water. Over this period, there were only two other technologies capable of offering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to provide water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were engineered at standard stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were created to make it much easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. The cistern he had built to obtain rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water needs.
That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residence.
The Magificent First Wonders by Bernini
The Magificent First Wonders by Bernini
Bernini's earliest water fountain, named Barcaccia, is a breath taking work of art found at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this spot is filled with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. Bernini would without a doubt have been happy to know that people still flock to what has become one the city's most fashionable areas, that surrounding his amazing fountain. In about 1630, the great artist built the very first fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. People can now see the fountain as an illustration of a commanding ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. Period writings dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was constructed as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In 1665, France was graced by Bernini's only extended trip outside of Italy.
