Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome

Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct assembled in Rome, began delivering the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had depended on natural springs up until then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole techniques obtainable at the time to supply water to segments of high elevation. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they utilized the brand-new method of redirecting the stream from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. During the length of the aqueduct’s route were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it simpler and easier to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Although the cardinal also had a cistern to accumulate rainwater, it couldn't produce enough water. To provide himself with a more useful way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened up, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.
