Inventors of the First Fountains Often working as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars all in one, from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, fountain designers were multi-talented individuals, Leonardo da Vinci as a creative intellect, inventor and scientific expert exemplified this Renaissance artist. The Romans began constructing ornate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were metallic or natural stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. The extraordinary aqueducts of Rome furnished water to the incredible public fountains, most of which you can visit today.
