Water Delivery Solutions in Ancient Rome
Water Delivery Solutions in Ancient Rome Previous to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Rome, citizens who resided on hills had to go even further down to get their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people living at higher elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a unique method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to supply water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Though they were initially developed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to gather water from the channel, commencing when he purchased the property in 1543. Whilst the cardinal also had a cistern to accumulate rainwater, it didn’t provide enough water. To give himself with a much more effective means to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened up, offering him access to the aqueduct below his residence.Bernini's Early Showpieces
