He carefully recorded his findings in his now famed notebooks about his investigations into the forces of nature and the qualities and movement of water. Modifying private villa configurations into innovative water displays complete with symbolic meaning and natural beauty, early Italian fountain designers fused resourcefulness with hydraulic and horticultural knowledge. Known for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden creations, Pirro Ligorio, the humanist, delivered the vision behind the splendors in Tivoli. The Source of Modern Day Fountains

It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
