Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Solutions

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Solutions Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct assembled in Rome, started supplying the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had counted on natural springs up until then. If citizens living at higher elevations did not have accessibility to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the other existing solutions of the time, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were built at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Although they were initially developed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543. The cistern he had made to obtain rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water needs. To provide himself with a more streamlined system to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened, giving him access to the aqueduct below his property.

In 1665 Bernini traveled to France, in what was to be his only lengthy absence from Italy.
