Aspects of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. Regarded as by Greeks to represent skin care, the kouroi were shaped into firm, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-developed, and athletic. Around 650 BC, life-size forms of the kouroi began to be seen.
