Archaic Greek Artistry: Outdoor Statuary The initial freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable accomplishment since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and attractive male or female (kore) Greeks.
Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to look stiff and always had foot in front; the males were healthy, powerful, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an amazing time of transformation for the Greeks as they extended into new modes of government, created fresh expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian battles, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the kinds of clashes that arose commonly, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
