Water Transport Strategies in Ancient Rome

Water Transport Strategies Ancient Rome 58580184647503351602.jpg Water Transport Strategies in Ancient Rome Rome’s first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, citizens living at higher elevations had to rely on natural springs for their water. If citizens living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the remaining existing techniques of the day, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed below the ground through Acqua Vergine to deliver drinking water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were built at regular stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were created to make it much easier to maintain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was utilized by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Despite the fact that the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it couldn't provide a sufficient amount of water. To provide himself with a more streamlined system to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his property.
