The Source of Today's Garden Water Fountains
Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classic Greek texts into Latin. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his objectives. In 1453 the Pope instigated the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day site of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

With imperial commissions in Brussels, London and Germany, he started his work in Italy, building expertise in garden design and grottoes with integrated and ingenious water features. He authored a book titled “The Principles of Moving Forces” toward the end of his lifetime while in France which came to be the basic tome on hydraulic technology and engineering. The book modified crucial hydraulic advancements since classical antiquity as well as detailing contemporary hydraulic technologies. As a mechanized method to shift water, Archimedes invented the water screw, chief among key hydraulic breakthroughs. Sunlight heated the liquid in two concealed containers next to the beautiful fountain were shown in an illustration. What occurs is the heated water expanded, goes up and locks up the conduits leading to the water fountain, consequently leading to activation. Pumps, water wheels, water attributes and garden pond concepts are mentioned in the text.
