Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are termed kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot extended out of a strict forward-facing posture and the male figurines were always undressed, with a compelling, strong physique. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more sophisticated forms of federal government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. During this time and other times of historical tumultuousness, clashes often occurred, most notably battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.

When and Where Did Water Features Originate?

Water Features Originate? 113951512221.jpg When and Where Did Water Features Originate? The translation of hundreds of classical Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his objectives. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. Building a mostra, an imposing celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had reconstructed.
