Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, residents living at higher elevations had to depend on natural streams for their water. Throughout this period, there were only 2 other techniques capable of supplying water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were added along its length when it was first designed.
The manholes made it less demanding to clean the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to extract water from the aqueduct, as we observed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he bought the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. He didn’t get an adequate amount water from the cistern that he had established on his property to collect rainwater. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat directly below his residence, and he had a shaft established to give him accessibility.
