Ancient Crete & The Minoans: Wall Fountains On the Greek island of Crete, excavations have discovered channels of numerous varieties. They not merely helped with the water supplies, they extracted rainwater and wastewater as well. Stone and clay were the materials of choice for these channels. Whenever manufactured from terracotta, they were usually in the shape of canals and round or rectangular pipes. Among these were terracotta conduits that were U shaped or a shortened, cone-like form which have just showed up in Minoan culture. Clay conduits were used to administer water at Knossos Palace, running up to three meters beneath the flooring. The water pipes also had other uses including collecting water and conveying it to a centralized place for storing. This required the terracotta piping to be suitable for holding water without seepage.
