Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome Rome’s first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural streams for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people living at greater elevations turned to water pulled from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. In the very early 16th century, the city began to make use of the water that ran below ground through Acqua Vergine to provide water to Pincian Hill. Throughout the time of its original construction, pozzi (or manholes) were installed at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel.
Whilst these manholes were created to make it less difficult to protect the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Even though the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it didn’t supply sufficient water. By using an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed below his property, he was able to suit his water needs.
