The Anglo-Saxon way of life was dramatically changed by the appearance of the Normans in the later eleventh century. Architecture and gardening were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. Nonetheless the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Castles were more basic constructions and often erected on blustery hills, where their people spent both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, regularly located in the widest, most fertile hollows. The bare fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of farming. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most uncorrupted style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. A big terrace intended for walking and as a means to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs around the building. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and enclosed by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.

Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Ancient Greece Up until the Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, a remarkable success, carvings had chiefly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look stiff and always had foot forward; the males were vigorous, powerful, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. During the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a deeper comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. Throughout this time and other durations of historic tumultuousness, clashes often occurred, most notably battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
