Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of age-old texts from their original Greek into Latin. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his ambitions. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. The historical Roman tradition of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Did You Know How Mechanical Concepts of Water Fountains Became Known? Instrumental to the advancement of scientific technology were the published letters and illustrated publications of the day. They were also the main means of transferring practical hydraulic information and water fountain design suggestions throughout Europe. An unnamed French water fountain engineer became an internationally celebrated hydraulic innovator in the later part of the 1500's. With imperial mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he started his work in Italy, acquiring expertise in garden design and grottoes with integrated and clever water features. The publication, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” written near the end of his lifetime in France, turned out to be the definitive text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering.
Explaining contemporary hydraulic systems, the book also updated critical hydraulic developments of classical antiquity. The water screw, a technical way to move water, and developed by Archimedes, was featured in the book. An ornamental fountain with sunlight heating the liquid in two containers concealed in a neighboring room was displayed in one illustration. The hot liquid expands and subsequently rises and closes the water lines consequently activating the water feature.
