Historic Crete & The Minoans: Wall Fountains
Historic Crete & The Minoans: Wall Fountains During archaeological excavations on the island of Crete, various types of conduits have been detected. They were used for water supply as well as removal of storm water and wastewater. They were commonly built from clay or stone. Terracotta was selected for canals and pipes, both rectangular and round. Amidst these were clay pipes that were U shaped or a shorter, cone-like form which have exclusively showed up in Minoan civilization. Terracotta conduits were used to distribute water at Knossos Palace, running up to three meters directly below the floors. The piping also had other uses including collecting water and diverting it to a primary site for storage. To make this feasible, the pipes had to be tailored to handle: Subterranean Water Transportation: It is not quite understood why the Minoans needed to transfer water without it being enjoyed. Quality Water Transportation: The pipes may also have been used to carry water to fountains which were separate from the city’s regular system.
Water Delivery Solutions in Historic Rome
Water Delivery Solutions in Historic Rome Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to rely on local springs for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technologies readily available at the time to supply water to spots of higher elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a newer strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to deliver water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Although they were originally developed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to get water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543.
It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to meet his needs. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran beneath his residential property.
