How Technical Concepts of Fountains Spread

How Technical Concepts of Fountains Spread Throughout Europe, the chief means of dissiminating useful hydraulic understanding and fountain design suggestions were the published pamphlets and illustrated publications of the time, which added to the evolution of scientific development. In the late 1500's, a French fountain developer (whose name has been lost) was the internationally renowned hydraulics pioneer. By designing landscapes and grottoes with incorporated and amazing water features, he began his career in Italy by receiving imperial commissions in Brussels, London and Germany. The book, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” penned towards the end of his life in France, turned out to be the fundamental writing on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. The publication updated crucial hydraulic advancements since classical antiquity as well as describing modern day hydraulic technologies. Prominent among these works were those of Archimedes, the inventor of the water screw, a mechanical means of moving water. An decorative water feature with sunlight heating the water in two containers concealed in an adjacent area was presented in one illustration. What occurs is the heated liquid expanded, goes up and locks up the pipes leading to the water fountain, and thus leading to activation.Technical Concepts Fountains Spread 773512154.jpg Pumps, water wheels, water features and backyard pond designs are documented in the publication.

The Beautiful Early Wonders by Bernini

The Beautiful Early Wonders by Bernini The Barcaccia, a stunning fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest water fountain.Beautiful Early Wonders Bernini 7274547490728003174.jpg To this day, this area is filled with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. Bernini would undoubtedly have been happy to know that people still flock to what has become one the city's trendiest areas, that around his amazing water fountain. The master's very first water fountain of his professional life was built at around 1630 at the behest of Pope Urbano VIII. A massive vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's central theme. Period reports dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was built as a monument to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In 1665 Bernini journeyed to France, in what was to be his sole prolonged absence from Italy.

Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges

Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to depend on natural streams for their water.Aqueducts: Answer Rome's Water Challenges 11795768.jpg Throughout this period, there were only two other systems capable of offering water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were added along its length when it was first engineered. Although they were originally planned to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, opening when he obtained the property in 1543. He didn’t get adequate water from the cistern that he had built on his property to collect rainwater. To provide himself with a more efficient system to assemble water, he had one of the manholes exposed, providing him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
