The Defining Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues The Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the statues, or kouros figures. The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot extended out of a strict forward-facing posture and the male figurines were regularly undressed, with a compelling, sturdy build. In 650 BC, life-size versions of the kouroi began to be seen. Rome’s Early Water Delivery Solutions Previous to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Rome, citizens who lived on hills had to journey even further down to gather their water from natural sources. If citizens living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to rely on the other existing techniques of the day, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s network were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry.
During the roughly nine years he owned the residence, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi used these manholes to take water from the channel in containers, though they were previously designed for the intent of maintaining and servicing the aqueduct. The cistern he had constructed to obtain rainwater wasn’t adequate to meet his water needs. To give himself with a much more streamlined system to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened up, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.
Instrumental to the advancement of scientific technology were the printed letters and illustrated publications of the time. They were also the primary means of transmitting practical hydraulic ideas and fountain design suggestions throughout Europe....
