A Short History of the Early Public Fountains The water from springs and other sources was initially delivered to the inhabitants of nearby towns and municipalities through water fountains, whose design was largely practical, not artistic. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the later half of the 19th century.
The elegance and spectacle of fountains make them perfect for traditional memorials. Rough in design, the first water fountains did not appear much like contemporary fountains. A stone basin, carved from rock, was the very first fountain, utilized for containing water for drinking and spiritual purposes. 2000 B.C. is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were originally used. The spray of water appearing from small spouts was pressured by gravity, the sole power source designers had in those days. Drinking water was delivered by public fountains, long before fountains became ornate public statues, as striking as they are functional. Fountains with elaborate decoration began to appear in Rome in about 6 BC, normally gods and animals, made with stone or copper-base alloy. Water for the open fountains of Rome was delivered to the city via a complex system of water aqueducts.
