Over this period, there were only two other technologies capable of offering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. In the very early 16th century, the city began to make use of the water that flowed below ground through Acqua Vergine to supply drinking water to Pincian Hill. Through its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were positioned at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel.
