"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary The initial freestanding statuary was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, statues of adolescent, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. Considered by Greeks to represent beauty, the kouroi were created into firm, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, brawny, and fit. Around 650 BC, life-size versions of the kouroi began to be observed. A massive age of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about new forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are examples of the sorts of conflicts that occurred commonly, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.

Eventually moving to Rome to fully show their artwork, primarily in the shape of public water fountains, Bernini’s father, a distinguished Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son. The young Bernini was an great worker and won praise and backing of important artists as well as popes. At the start he was renowned for his sculptural abilities. An authority in ancient Greek engineering, he used this knowledge as a platform and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most famously in the Vatican. Though many artists had an impact on his work, Michelangelo had the most profound effect.
