For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot stretched out of a fixed forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always nude, with a powerful, sturdy build. The kouroi started to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic time, a big time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new types of government, expressions of art, and a deeper understanding of people and cultures outside Greece.
