Characteristics of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece The primitive Greeks built the 1st freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the statues. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot stretched out of a strict forward-facing pose and the male figurines were regularly undressed, with a compelling, powerful shape. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was an awesome point of transformation for the Greeks as they expanded into new modes of government, produced fresh expressions of art, and gained information of the people and cultures outside of Greece.
