Anglo Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest The advent of the Normans in the latter half of the eleventh century greatly transformed The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Architecture and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But there was no time for home life, domesticated architecture, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Most often designed upon windy summits, castles were straightforward constructs that permitted their inhabitants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive strategies, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings generally installed in only the most fecund, broad valleys. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the quiet avocation of horticulture. The purest specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent in modern times is Berkeley Castle. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A big terrace intended for walking and as a way to stop attackers from mining under the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an old yew hedge cut into the form of crude battlements.
Attributes of Outdoor Statuary in Archaic Greece
Attributes of Outdoor Statuary in Archaic Greece Up until the Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, a remarkable triumph, carvings had largely been completed in walls and pillars as reliefs. Younger, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. In about 650 BC, the varieties of the kouroi became life-sized. A massive age of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about newer forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a greater comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. However, these conflicts did little to impede the development of the Greek civilization.
