Engineering and horticulture were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.

Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of age-old texts from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the model seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The historical Roman tradition of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Water Features
Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Water Features There are numerous famous fountains in the city center of Rome. Pretty much all of them were planned, architected and built by one of the finest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was also a urban designer, in addition to his expertise as a fountain engineer, and records of his life's work are apparent all through the streets of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. An exceptional workman, Bernin received praise and the the backing of popes and well known painters. Initially he was well known for his sculpting skills.
Working gracefully with Roman marble, he used a base of experience in the ancient Greek architecture, most notably in the Vatican. He was influenced by many great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest effect on his work.
