Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the 2nd half of the 11th century irreparably improved The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. Engineering and horticulture were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration.Anglo-Saxon Grounds Time Norman Conquest 67753923397669083.jpg Monasteries and castles served separate functions, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures assembled in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on understanding offensive and defensive tactics. Relaxing pursuits such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. Berkeley Castle, perhaps the most pristine model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. The keep is rumored to have been created during the time of William the Conqueror. A large terrace intended for exercising and as a means to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs about the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.

Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of age-old texts from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the model seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The historical Roman tradition of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
