At What Point Did Water Fountains Originate?

At What Point Did Water Fountains Originate? Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of age-old texts from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the model capital of the Christian world. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Anglo Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman ConquestAnglo Saxon Gardens Time Norman Conquest 183547136757.jpg The Anglo-Saxon way of life was significantly changed by the introduction of the Normans in the later eleventh century. Engineering and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. However, there was no time for home life, domestic design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole realm. Because of this, castles were cruder buildings than monasteries: Monasteries were often important stone buildings set in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were erected on windy crests where their inhabitants devoted time and space to tasks for offense and defense. Tranquil pursuits such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is symbolized in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed illustration we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstruction to assailants attempting to excavate under the castle walls. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an aged yew hedge trimmed into the shape of crude battlements.

Bernini: The Genius Behind Italy's Greatest Water Fountains

Bernini: Genius Behind Italy's Greatest Water Fountains 116676693191.jpg Bernini: The Genius Behind Italy's Greatest Water Fountains The Barcaccia, a beautiful fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest fountain. Roman residents and site seers who enjoy verbal exchanges as well as being the company of others still go to this spot. Today, the city streets surrounding Bernini's fountain are a trendy area where people go to meet, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. In about 1630, the great master designed the very first water fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. Depicted in the fountain's design is a large ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. Period writings dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was constructed as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In 1665 Bernini journeyed to France, in what was to be his sole prolonged absence from Italy.
