Water Transport Solutions in Early Rome

Water Transport Solutions in Early Rome Previous to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Roma, citizens who resided on hills had to journey further down to collect their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people living at higher elevations turned to water taken from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. To deliver water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they utilized the emerging process of redirecting the circulation from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. The manholes made it easier to maintain the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the aqueduct, as we discovered with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had established on his property to collect rainwater. Via an orifice to the aqueduct that ran below his property, he was set to fulfill his water demands.
