The Source of Today's Garden Water Fountains
The Source of Today's Garden Water Fountains
The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental dedicatory fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a custom which was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day site of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
Anglo-Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest
The introduction of the Normans in the later half of the eleventh century considerably modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But before centering on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures built in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on understanding offensive and defensive practices. Gardening, a peaceful occupation, was unfeasible in these fruitless fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is conceivably the most unscathed illustration we have. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. As a technique of deterring assailants from tunneling under the walls, an immense terrace surrounds the building. On 1 of these terraces lies a quaint bowling green: it is covered in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is created into the shape of rough ramparts.
