The Results of the Norman Conquest on Anglo Saxon Gardens
The Results of the Norman Conquest on Anglo Saxon Gardens The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century significantly altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Architecture and gardening were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation.
But before focusing on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society. Most often constructed upon windy summits, castles were basic constructs that permitted their occupants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive programs, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings generally added in only the most fecund, broad valleys. The serene practice of gardening was not viable in these bleak bastions. Berkeley Castle is perhaps the most intact model in existence nowadays of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is reported to have been conceived during the time of William the Conqueror. A monumental terrace serves as a hindrance to intruders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. A picturesque bowling green, covered in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.

Up until the Archaic Greeks created the 1st freestanding sculpture, a phenomenal triumph, carvings had primarily been completed in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to look stiff and always had foot forward; the males were vigorous, strong, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A huge era of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about newer forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. Wars like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are indicatory of the tumultuous nature of the time period, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
